This stretch of river is ideal for birdwatching, fishing, and wildlife observation. Keep an eye out for sunbathing turtles, soaring birds of prey, grazing deer, and the occasional busy beaver. Your paddle route follows the Lamoille River Paddler’s Trail (Peterson Dam to Lake Champlain) offering a rich mix of nature and tranquility.

This vintage Mad River Canoe measures 16′ 5.25″ long and offers stability (37″ wide). Made locally right in Waitsfield, Vermont. Constructed with wooden gunwales and cane seats (in good condition). The shallow V-shaped hull design offers secondary stability and is built for river paddling.
Paddle 1.5 miles downstream along the Sand Bar Wildlife Management Area to reach the tranquil Lamoille River Delta, a quiet spot perfect for swimming, birdwatching, and picnicking. Enjoy warm, shallow water and scenic views of inner Mallett’s Bay, the bike causeway, and the Adirondacks in the distance. Complete your paddle with a loop around the Delta before heading back. ⏱️ Plan for 1–3 hours, including stops.
Paddle over four miles upstream through a mix of nature, wildlife, and farmland. Duck under the Route 2 bridge, pass through narrow gorges, and wind between corn and dairy fields towards the University of Vermont Rowing Boathouse (Private Property). Plan for 2–3 hours, including stops.
