A great time on the water starts with safety! Whether you're an owner or a renter, let's make sure everyone's prepared for a fantastic and safe experience.
Gear
- Watercraft: Is the kayak, canoe, or paddleboard in excellent working order? Check for any damage.
- Paddles: Make sure paddles are sturdy and unbroken.
- Life Jackets (PFDs): You need a Coast Guard-approved PFD for every person, sized correctly and in great shape.
- Safety Kit: Always have a whistle (to signal for help) and a bailer/sponge (for kayaks/canoes to remove water).
Check the Conditions
- Weather First: ALWAYS check the forecast for wind, waves, and storms before you head out. Lake Champlain can get rough fast!
- Stay Ashore if Unsafe: If conditions look dangerous, do not launch. Your safety is worth rescheduling.
Personal Preparedness
- Can You Swim? Everyone in your group should be able to swim.
- Stay Hydrated & Protected: Bring plenty of water and apply sunscreen. Dress for the weather and potential splashes.
- Emergency Phone: Keep a charged phone in a waterproof bag.
- Stay Sober: Never operate any watercraft under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
On-Water Smarts
- Don’t Overload: Stick to the watercraft’s weight capacity.
- Know the Rules: Be aware of Vermont’s boating laws.
- Share Your Plan: Consider telling someone on shore your route and expected return time.
- Be Aware: Watch out for other boats, swimmers, and hazards.
- If You Capsize: STAY WITH YOUR BOAT! It floats and makes you easier to spot.
After the Rental
- Report Issues: Please immediately report any damage or concerns to the owner and through the app.
